In Formula One: The Champions—70 Years of Legendary F1 Drivers author Maurice Hamilton and award-winning photographers Bernard and son Paul-Henri Cahier have produced a 240-page hard cover book that pays tribute to the great F1 champions of the modern era.
To attain the title of F1 World Driver’s Champion is considered the pinnacle achievement in motorsport and beyond the wonderful photography, the book includes the in-depth story of the 33 legends who achieved this accolade.
From the first: Dr. Giuseppe ‘Nino’ Farina in 1950, to the current: Lewis Hamilton, who won his sixth title in 2019, “Some were better than others at, say, getting the whole team around them, or being technically brilliant, or even being super quick drivers. But they were united by being very competitive and extremely astute,” said Bernie Ecclestone in the book’s foreword.
In all, some of the 33 champions met their demise in cars—both on the road and track. Nineteen are still living, leaving 14 that have died in the last 70 years. Four died of old age, one in a plane crash, one died of a heart attack while racing at an advanced age, another from a lifetime of substance abuse.
The book includes exclusive quotes from the likes of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton and the author’s interviews with many of F1’s now-departed heroes, such as Ayrton Senna and James Hunt.
The highest class of single-seater auto racing and its incredible drivers are brought to vivid life in this book and is a worthy addition to any F1 enthusiast’s collection.
